AFSSET guideline

French AFSSET agency published the guideline ”Protocole AFSSET 2009” guideline (after first version in 2006) for limiting VOC emissions into indoor air. It specifies chamber emission testing and limit values after 3 and after 28 days of storage in a ventilated test chamber - the 28 days test is regarded as representative for long-term emissions. The test method is ISO 16000 (parts 3, 6, 9, 10 and 11), and the results are calculated to the European reference room of 3 m x 4 m x 2.5 m with ½ air change per hour.

AFSSET 2009 guideline expanded the scope to include more product groups, and it specifies limit values for emissions:

• Carcinogens after 3 and 28 days
• Total VOC (TVOC) after 3 and 28 days
• VOC with a defined CLI limit value after 28 days (some 160 limit values were specified)

There is no official "AFSSET label", and there is no specific French approval procedure for testing laboratories. These should be ISO 17025 accredited, with AFSSET testing expressively within scope of the accreditation, for ensuring sufficient quality level.
