What is Dimethylfumarate ?
Dimethylfumarate (DMF) was most often contained as an anti-mould agent in little pouches fixed inside furniture or added to boxes for e.g. footwear or toys. It evaporated and impregnated the product, protecting it from moulds.
What is the Problem ?
Dimethylfumarate (DMF) can affect consumers in contact with the products. It penetrates through clothes onto consumers’ skin, causing painful skin contact dermatitis, including itching, irritation, redness and burns. In some cases, acute respiratory troubles were reported.
The legal situation:
A commission decision of 17 March 2009 requires Member States to ensure that products containing the biocide Dimethylfumarate are not placed or made available on the market. According to the commission, the analytical method employed in the analysis for Dimethylfumarate should be able to reliably quantify 0,1 mg DMF per kg of product or part of the product.
